tigers 8-3, to take the first game of the 2012 world series, and the star of the game, pablo sandoval. three home runs, a ties a team record. first, we're going to check in with our crews outside the ballpark, to see what the fans are up to now. we begin with ktvu's ken pritchett. >> reporter: it's fairly quiet where we are right now outside of at&t park. most of the fans have left the area around the ballpark. look around the street at the restaurant, a lot of fans still celebrating this victory tonight, earlier just after the game, fans were cheering as they poured out of at&t park. high fives, and celebration after a victory in game 1 of the world series. all of the fans that we talked to agreed on what was the highlight of this game. >> sandoval, he came through huge. he did his thing.

he represented. oh, my god. >> he saw him hit one. >> i saw him hit two, and then i saw him hit three baby! oh, my god. >> panda sandoval. he almost had four! >> the highlight for you? >> sandoval. it was crazy. and zito rocked it as well. we couldn't have asked for a better game to start it off. we're going to win. >> reporter: we are here at second and king. this is where the players actually leave the ballpark. just about 15 minutes ago, we saw right fielder hunter pence come out here on a scooter, and stop and talk to some fans. a surreal moment after a win in game 1 of the world series. for more on the fans, and the happenings here outside of at&t park, we'll send it now to ktvu's ken wayne. >> reporter: we're on a rooftop across from willie mays plaza here at 3rd and king at at&t

park. we have some light sprinkles here, enough to get the road a little slick. not causing troubles here tonight. all of the intersections and all the streets around at&t park are open again. it took about an hour or so to get all 35,000 fans out of the stadium. now you're looking at the diehards who are lingering, and soaking in this victory in game 1 of the world series. we did see. you were talking about the hunter pence, and giants players coming out. we saw the detroit buses come out from our end of the stadium. as the buses rolled on by, a lot of giants fans let out a big loud boo as the buses rolled by. you can hear the horns out there. people still celebrating. live in san francisco, ken wayne, ktvu, channel 2 news. the giants made it look surprisingly easy tonight. solid pitching from barry zito, plenty of hitting at the top of the lineup, and of course the

panda. sports director mark ibanez is on the field now at at&t park, with his take on game 1. >> reporter: my take on this thing is giant fans were just off the hook tonight. i think they helped rattle verlander on the mound, and the detroit tigers as a whole. but we've got a new mr. october. we'll call him senior october. pablo sandoval. he let it go, with a shot off to center field. his night was just getting started. it's not hyperbole to say it was an historic night. just incredible. it wouldn't be the end of it for pablo sandoval. this time, a man on, to the opposite field. he takes verlander deep, and for those of you just joining us, remember, he had a bases loaded triple in the all-star game off this guy. barry zito, will get the victory. he comes through again.

went 5 2/3 innings. just 1 run. and he is the winner. pablo, not finished. again against al albuquerque. way gone to center field. on the night for pablo, three home runs, one single, and four rbi's. the tigers completely stymied. they scored a couple of meaningless runs in the 9th inning, but the giants take game 1, 8-3, beating the tigers ace handily, and they've got the momentum clearly in this series. three games away from a world series title. at at&t, i'm mark ibanez, back to you, frank and julie. >> three home runs in one world series game has only been achieved by a handful of players. babe ruth did it twice in 1926, and 1928. reggie jackson did it in 1977. albert pujols with the

chance. first of all, it's illegal. and second, if you buy a scalpers' ticket, there's no way of knowing if that ticket will get you into the game. still, plenty of giants fans were willing to take that chance. buyers and sellers, negotiating prices. >> i'll give you 700 for all three. >> i'll wait. i'm right here. >> reporter: scalpers are trying to get top dollar. >> you want face value? >> yeah. >> what's the most expensive ticket you sold? >> lower box. >> how much? >> that was 600. >> reporter: the secret for buyers is to wait until the game starts. >> prices have dropped about $100 in the last hour. >> you get a better deal if you want. but if you want to plan ahead, you want to get it, two or three days ago, yeah, you're going to pay $1,000. >> at this point of the game, i would pay $250 a ticket.

which is above face value. >> reporter: but how do you know if the ticket is valid. experts say have them walk you to the gate. >> not just a print out. >> have you been burned before? >> i have had friends that have been burned, i personally haven't. >> reporter: if the system works, fans see the game, and the scalpers make a profit. >> i'll go home and watch the game, and count what i got. >> reporter: we could see a lot of scalping action. by the way, that tactic of waiting to the last minute to buy a ticket, i'm told also works on stubhub, and other internet sites. if you wait until just before game time, desperate ticket holders will try to unload those tickets. you might get a bargain. the quest for the best view of tonight's game took one fan

to dangerous heights. the man climbed up san francisco's lefty odoole bridge. police say he was arrested for trespassing. there are other ways to watch the game for free that won't get you arrested. giant fans know there are free seats pretty close to the action. john sasaki live at mccovey cove with that part of the action. >> reporter: fans couldn't score a ticket to the game, but that didn't stop them from being out here. the best part was as usual, the free area outside the arcade. we were inside as barry zito knocked in the giants 5th run, and these fans went wild. >> we bringing it back. we didn't have the one year last year. we had it in 2010.

officials in san mateo county are trying to learn the identity of a girl who's body was found on the beach. the body turned up on half moon bay on sunday. heather holmes joins us now from the sheriff's office in redwood city. >> reporter: julie, desperate, the department will soon conduct an aerial search of the coastline, because personal items have yet to turn up any leads. the state beach is known as a great spot for hiking. it was hikers who found the body floating in the water on sunday. >> we're in the process right now of trying to identify her. >> reporter: that has proven to be difficult. >> this one is from mountain view pd. >> reporter: a search of state and national missing persons reports has yet to turn up a match for this caucasian girl

from 12 to 16 years of age. >> based on the time she's been in the water is very concerning. >> reporter: leading to many questions about what exactly took place along the picturesque san mateo county coast. >> maybe she was with somebody else, such as a car. or they could have been on the coast and something happened. >> reporter: raising the possibility of more victims. the girl was also wearing this timex digital watch. she also had a full set of braces. investigators are now working on several theories, soon, efforts to identify this young victim will head in a new direction. >> we're going to start searching the coastline, to see if maybe a car had gone off the cliff on the coast, and this is possibly a passenger in that vehicle. >> reporter: they'll be conducting that search. frank and julie, they've also asked for forensic dentists to step in, to try to give this

young girl a name. heather holmes, ktvu, channel 2 news. shark experts have determined it was a 15 to 16- foot great white shark that killed a 39-year-old man off the coast of santa barbara county yesterday. members of the shark research committee examined the search board an the body of francisco solario jr. all beaches nearby are closed for at least 72 hours now as a precaution. 51-year-old mark air net of oakland has been identified as the crane inspector killed today at the port of oakland. according to cal-osha, arnet was inspecting a crane when he was crushed in the head. students and colleagues of

long james logan high teacher chris ryan. ryan's body was found off a ravine on 280. the cause of ryan's body is still under investigation. he was 54 years old. a female chp officer shot and killed a man driving a stolen vehicle in lake county. it happened around 2:00 p.m. this afternoon along the twin lake subdivision. the officer stopped the stolen vehicle, then there was a fight, and the man grabbed the officer's neck. the officer fired, killing the man. the d.a. says the officer is okay at this point no names have been released. in the south bay, police and educators came together tonight to talk about safety, after three cars were hit in just one month.

noel walker tells us what is being done. >> reporter: cars, pedestrians, and pikers share the roadway, not always successfully. three times this month, students have been hit in the crosswalk on their way to school. tonight, we attended that meeting that was meant to address safety concerns. it was a meeting filled with some concerned patients, and a lot of empty chairs. tabs on the world series game might have provided explanation for why few people came to talk about a safe school commute. three times this month, grand middle school students have been hit by cars and injured in a crosswalk. >> he got hit like on his side of his body. >> the car that i just waved over, he's doing 37 in a 25. and that's unacceptable. especially on a wet road and children present. >> reporter: tonight, police have a message for drivers who don't yield to people in the

crosswalk. >> we are going to hand out a lot of tickets. that's going to be our stance for a some time. >> what are drivers missing about crosswalks? >> reporter: this special meeting was meant to give parents answers to questions. >> part of the problem is not on the street, it's in the parking lot. >> reporter: gives police a chance for a drivers ed refresher. >> once you're in there all cars are supposed to yield to you, from curb to curb. >> reporter: and reminding parents no matter how old students might seem, they're still children. >> they're just bigger bodies. >> reporter: signing warning drivers that there are crosswalks ahead have gone up since the last accident here at graham middle school. so far, all of these accidents have had minor injuries, but no one wants to see it happen again. reporting live, noel walker, back to you. stock markets ended on the negative side today, but the losses weren't as steep as

yesterday's. the dow dropped 25 points today. the nasdaq was down 8. any early gains were lost after the federal reserve said the economy still needs support. facebook was one bright spode. posting the biggest gain since the company went public in may. it closed at $23.23. the gain was credited to facebook's report yesterday of an increase in ad revenue from mobile devices. and zynga of san francisco surprised wall street today. the social gaming company posted stronger than expected revenue for the 3rd quarter, it also announced it's made a deal for online poker and gambling in the u.k., using real money. those games should launch sometime next year. zynga shares rows in after hour's trading. new home sales have risen to the highest levels in two and a half years. today, the commerce department said new home sales jumped 7.5%

last month. sales have risen 27.1% in the past year. that is the strongest yearly gain since february. although sales are still well below healthy levels, they do suggest the housing recovery is strengthening. today, the transition day between all of the stormy weather over the past couple of days, and the nice weather headed our way. right now, a few light showers popping up across parts of the bay area. this happens to be the radar loop over the past three hours. nothing too extreme. this is quickly heading out to the east bay. there's a live doppler sweep. nothing too major here, but still enough to wet the roadways in parts of the east bay. there's our forecast model. the cloud cover right now. cloud cover first thing tomorrow morning. maybe some drizzle out there, or a leftover sprinkle. then into the afternoon hours, some changes out there. as far as overnight lows, upper

woman was badly burned tonight. firefighters were called to a fire along the deanza trail. they discovered a homeless woman down the ravine. she had suffered second and third degree burns. investigators say the fire is suspicious. and they're asking for any witnesses to come forward. barnes and noble, the bookstore chain says criminals have tampered with the devices customers use to pay for their purchases. mike mibach tells us how they got away with it until now. >> reporter: downtown walnut creek, 1149 south main street. >> every once in a while, i will stop by a barnes and noble and pick something up. >> reporter: a hot spot for many book enthusiasts. >> there's something about browsing through books on a book shelf. >> reporter: it's been a hot spot for some sophisticated

15. at barnes and noble.com, it was not affected. new at 10:00, a teacher at hercules middle school is under arrest, accused of bringing drugs on campus. police say while trying to figure out who the gray honda belonged to, a large amount of marijuana and cash was found in the car. it belonged to allen goodman of walnut creek. he is a teacher at the school. he was charged with several counts of marijuana possession. new information tonight about the deaths of two people in a plane crash near byron. the pilot's son confirms, his son took off. the investigators are now reviewing dental records before releasing the victim identities. but eric beanie said his

receipt. we've opinion told benjamin was definitely with kwan at the texas strip club. our investigation continues tomorrow night on the 10:00 news. it was not just kwan who spent questionable money in public places. hercules police announced that a husband and wife were formally charged with the stabbing beth of a woman from hercules. darnell and tanya washington were charged with killing 55- year-old suzie ko inside her home october 5. investigators say the couple was driving ko's car when they were picked up. the couple is also suspected in other crimes, columning the shooting of a los angeles county sheriff's deputy, tanya washington is also accused of helping her husband escape from jail. a 19-year-old is behind bars tonight accused of killing his brother's wife and two of their young children yesterday in rancho cordova. sacramento county sheriffs investigators said they found

him in a nearby dennys after spotting the family's stolen van in the parking lot. investigators say he killed his sister-in-law, 23-year-old aliana and her children. friends close to the family say the 19-year-old had a history of drug abuse. tonight, the contra costa county fire chief is trying to convince voters that they're not being pullied into approving a parcel tax. said it's the district's last option. last night we told you at least seven fire stations could close if the measure q partial tax is not approved. it has already used up $25 million in reserves. >> we don't need the standard currently. so when you start to look at reducing that capacity by 30% potentially, it has a huge

tomorrow marks one year sinces violent clash at oakland's frank agala plaza. to mark the anniversary, a march scheduled for 7:00 tomorrow night. city police have taken a lot of criticism for last year's demonstration. this time, they say it will be different. >> we have a lot of confidence at this point that we can handle the demonstration. >> about two weeks ago, 200 protesters went on a rampage in

oakland, targeting not only city hall, but banks and some local businesses. an analysis of the arrests made during occupy protests in oakland show that most cases never resulted in charges being filed. according to the oakland tribune, since october 25 of last year, 737 people were arrested for a variety of crimes during the occupy protests, including felony assaults and misdemeanor vandalism. the d.a. only filed charges against 109 people. 37 were found guilty. 55 cases are still pending. turning now to the race for the white house. the polls show a very tight race. the president is on a 40 hour campaign marathon through battle ground states. he talked about his plans for a second term. >> the reason i want four more years is because i've got a

plan that will actually create jobs. a plan that will actually create middle class security. unlike mitt romney, i'm actually proud to talk about what's in my plan. >> at a stop in iowa, the president met some women supporters at a pizzeria. he also visited southern california, and right now is in las vegas. meantime, mitt romney made a stop in reno. he also spoke about economic recovery. >> small businesses is where some 2/3 of the jobs in this country come from. i want to keep taxes down on install business. i want to get regulators to see they're encouraging small business, not crushing it. >> romney walked off the plane to a rally in cedar rapids. he said he would be a better choice for american families. with the election nearing, the birther controversy is now reignited by donald trump.
